On November 21, 1942, Stephen Jr. (Steve) was born to the late Stephen Miller, Sr. and Ruth Smith-Miller in Utica, MS. He was the fourth of fourteen children and was called Junior in his younger years. Over time, he was fondly given a few nicknames including Chief and Raw Hide. As a child, Steve was crafty and was always building fun toys including slides and wagons to enjoy with his siblings.
Steve attended school in Hinds and Copiah counties. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Utica, MS.
As a young adult, Steve moved to Chicago, IL and worked several jobs, eventually landing a permanent one at Evanston Hospital and remained there for a number of years. He united with Christian Fellowship Church. He later met and married Velma Moore and to this union one son Stephen Miller, III (Stevie) was born.
In approximately 1985 Steve decided to give up the cold Chicago winters and moved back to the Greater New Orleans area. He seemed so happy to be back home amongst family and friends and each year looked forward to attending the family reunion. Not long after his return, he went on jobs with his younger brother Roger and eventually found his new home in Folsom, LA. Before long, he met and married Martha Perry and together raised their boys and daughter Dionne. Martha predeceased him February 5, 2003. Steve was employed at Tulane National Primate Research Center in Covington, Louisiana until his retirement. He loved to talk about his work and tell stories of the many encounters he had on various jobs.
Steve was a member of the Holmeville Missionary Baptist Church in Folsom, LA and attended until his health began failing. He was well known in the Folsom community. He enjoyed his attendance at the Senior Center, a casual trip to the store or just a ride down the road.
On Thursday morning, March 17, 2022, Steve suddenly departed this life at the home of his devoted brother Sterling Miller and wife Earlean Miller in Avondale, LA. Steve was predeceased by his parents and three brothers: Cleveland, Louis, and Stephen Miller, Jr.
