Rita Mae Lewis Smith was born on March 6, 1938, to the late Marcus and Luberta Lewis and transitioned peacefully into her Savior's arms on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the age of 87. She was married to her late husband, Thornton C. Smith, Jr. She was baptized at Bethlehem Baptist Church where she was a faithful and lifelong member. She served as Church Secretary for 27 years. She also served as Secretary for the Golden Sunrise Benevolent Association and as Secretary for the Promise Land Cemetery Maintenance Organization. She was educated in the Plaquemines Parish School System. Rita Mae was very mild mannered, and she always wore a smile. She attended school to improve upon her God-given gifts as a seamstress. She used this gift to design and sew clothes for herself, her family, and many others through the years. She lived by the motto "believe in God first & then believe in yourself."
She dedicated her life to serving and praising God, to her church, and to her family. To celebrate her legacy, Rita Mae leaves her daughters: Constance Williams, Adrian Hill, Glenda Matthews, and Stephanie Reed; sister: Betty Encalade; brothers: Marcus Lewis and Melvin Lewis, Sr.; sons-in-law: Francis Isidore, Charles Hill, Rev. Dr. Ronald Matthews, Sr., and Pastor Terence Reed; grandchildren: Trechelle, Lakeia, Danielle, Kierston, Aimee, Terrion, Donovan, and Ronald, Jr.; great-grandchildren: Alexus, Khiah, Trinity, Kinsley, Kylie, Delilah, Kendrick, Jayden, Avery, Jameson, and Damian; sisters-in law: Betty Lewis and Darlene Lewis; brother-in-law: Adam Matthews; godchildren: Sylvia Lewis, Sandra Lewis-Jenkins, and Reginald Clay; and countless other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; husband; daughter: Cheryl Isidore; granddaughter: Meghan Williams; brothers: Elbert, Marvin, and Rev. Walter Lewis, Sr.; son-in-law: Herbert Williams; sisters-in-law: Mimey Matthews, Hilda Smith, Augustine Bienemy, Minerva Williams, Dinah Clay, Marion Smith, Ethel Smith, and Josephine Smith; brothers-in-law: Nathaniel Encalade, Joshua Smith, Eddie Smith, Oscar Smith, William Clay, Harry Williams, and Sidney Bienemy.
Relatives and friends of the family; pastor, officers and members of the Bethlehem Baptist Church; and all neighboring churches are invited to attend the funeral service held at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 111 Bethlehem Lane, Braithwaite, LA 70040 on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 11AM, Rev. Dr. Michael W. Jiles, Sr., officiating. Visitation will begin at 9AM until service time.
