Oscar Joseph Jr. Obituary

Oscar Joseph Jr. was born on October 3, 1935, to the late Oscar Joseph Sr. and Samelia Poche in St. James Parish, Louisiana. He was a dedicated and hardworking man who retired from both Highland Refinery and Avondale Shipyard, where he worked as a shipfitter and a foreman. 

Oscar was a faithful and devoted member of New St. Matthews Baptist Church. Under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Lovelace, he was baptized and later served the church faithfully as a Deacon. 

Oscar married the love of his life, Odessa Joseph (affectionately known as his “Black Queen”) on September 3, 1987, and together they shared 38 wonderful years of marriage filled with love and devotion. 

Lovingly known as Papa and Dadee, Oscar found his greatest joy in spending quality time with his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he adored and cherished deeply. He was an avid sports fan, with a special love for baseball and the Dallas Cowboys, and he especially enjoyed gathering every Sunday to feast at his beloved granddaughter Quan’s home. 

On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Oscar transitioned peacefully to his eternal home. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Samelia Joseph: four brothers George Joseph, Clarence Joseph, Frederick Joseph and Wilbert Joseph, Sr.; four sisters Emily Joseph, Beatrice Sutherland, Yvonne Smith and Samelia Ross; and one son Kevin Bo Joseph. 

He leaves behind to cherish him: his devoted wife Odessa Joseph, 

9 children: Kathy Joseph, Oscar Joseph Jr, Lester Joseph of Donaldsonville, La, Sandra Missy Brumfield (Kevin), Antoinette Net WIlliams (Rick), Dwayne Joseph (Nekole), Marvin Joseph of Bridge City, La, Brian Joseph (Sharon) of Harvey La. 

5 stepchildren: Wanda Robinson (James), Cardella Mayho, Thomas Mayho (Keshawn), Norva Nwosu (Ben) and Karen Sumner  

 42 Grandchildren,57 Great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters in law, and several dear friends and neighbors.

Relatives and friends of the family, pastor officers and members of New St.  Matthew B.C., New Zion B.C., and all neighboring churches are invited to attend the funeral service on Friday January 2, 2026, at New Zion B.C. church located at 1131 Garden Road, Marrero LA. 70072. The visitation will begin at 8AM followed by a 10AM service. Rev. Jordan L. Robinson Sr., host pastor and Rev. Clarence Lovelace, pastor of New St. Matthew B.C. will officiate. Interment will be held on Saturday January 3, 2026, in Woodland Park Memorial Cemetery 9820 Nine Mile Point Road, Westwego LA. 70094 at 10AM.  The repast will be held on Friday immediately following the service at the Marrero Community Center 1425 Walkertown Way, Marrero LA.
