Merlyn Coleman Mattis

Merlyn, otherwise called Ms. Rhone, Mern, Burn, was born to the late Bertha Sowell and the late Ivan Coleman on December 17, 1944, in the district of Ginger Hall, Saint Catherine, Jamacia West Indies. She was the first of five children Newman (Jamacia), Alwin (Jamacia), Dorothy (Jamacia), and Petrona (USA).
She attended the Harewood Elementary School where she graduated on the 9th level grade. She took a course in dressmaking where she did an excellent job. After getting married to the late Barrington Mattis she gave up on dress making to take care of her children, Devon (Canada), Paulette (deceased USA), Norma (USA), Kendrick (Jamacia), and Wilton (United Kingdom).
After the death of Barrington, she migrated to New York where she stayed with her daughter Marie until Marie's death in 2015. Following the death of her daughter Meryln moved to New Orleans, Louisiana and stayed with her Sonny-in-law, Cornelius LeBlanc and Norma who took care of her up to her giving up her earthly home on January 25, 2023, at West Jefferson Hospital, in Marrero Louisiana.
Merlyn is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and devoted friends.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the celebration of life services which will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at New Testament Baptist Bible Center, located at 1500 Pailet Street Harvey, LA 70058. The visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., and the service will follow at 10 a.m. Pastor Jerry D. Davis Jr. officiating.
