Melvin Barnes “Mel” departed this life peacefully at his home in Marrero LA. on Thursday, November 3, 2022. He was 86 years old. Mel was born on September 3, 1936, in Narin LA. to the union of the late Clem and Mary Johnson Barnes. Devoted father of Valerie (Lonnie) Hardy, Lynell (Milton) Mincey and Shawn Barnes. Brother of Walter Dobard Sr. (late Shirley), Calvin Barnes, Barbara Barnes Thompson (Virgil) and the late Ulysis Barnes (late Olivia). Bennie Dobard (late Eva), James Barnes, and Olga Mae Tropaze. Godfather of Vanetta Jackson and Rodney Parker. Grandfather of 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Mel is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and devoted friends.
Mel retired from Plaquemines Parish Government in 1998 as an operator with many years of dedicated service. He was also a member of the Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church of Port Sulphur, having been baptized there in 2011.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at the Greater Mt Sinai Baptist Church located at 27954 LA-23, Port Sulphur LA. 70083. The visitation will begin at 9 A.M. followed by the service at 11A.M. Pastor Allen Johnson will officiate, and interment will follow in Mt. Zion Memorial Park Empire LA. 70050. The family will also receive guests on Friday, November 11, 2022, from 6P.M. until 8P.M. at Robinson Family Funeral Home 9611 LA-23, Belle Chasse LA. 70037.
