Mary Ellen Nickles Lewis departed this life peacefully on February 5, 2023, at her home in New Roads, La. She was 80 years old and a native and lifelong resident of New Orleans 7th Ward.
Daughter of the late William Nickles and the late Evelyn Haines Nickles. Devoted wife of the late James C. Lewis.
Mother of Evelyn Smith (Henry), Jean Nickles (Reynaldo), Cynthia Dobard (Raynard), Carol Lewis (Steven Underwood), James Nickles, Clenent Nickles and the late Virgil Lewis, Judy Lewis (Farrell Williamson Jr). Devoted friend of Flemming Moran. Sister of Alice Brooks (Ellery), Geraldine Branch, Diane Thomas, Lucille Cross, Lorriane Nickles, Donna Daliet, Angela Nickles, George Nickles (Gloria), Albert Nickles (Tracy), Melvin Nickles (Elda), and the late Josie Matthews, Anita Nickles, Elnora Nickles, William Nickles Jr., and Willie Nickles.
Grandmother of Christal Caire, Jerrilyn Hollis, Mary Sam, Nichole Bentley, Nikia Smith, Gaynell Turner, Cleneisha King, Latoya Payne, Akera Nickles, Tramaine Payne, Julius Lewis, Jeffery Turner Jr, Farrell Williamson III, Michael Clavin Jr, Clement Nickles, and the late Alonzo Turner and Renaldo Nickles. She is also survived by 30 great grandchildren, 2 great - great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and devoted friends.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial which will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Church located at 1835 St. Roch Ave, New Orleans, LA 70117. The visitation will begin at 9 a.m., and the service will begin at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at Westlawn Cemetery in Gretna, LA.
