The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Mrs. Marguerite L. Ragas, age 101, of Belle Chasse, Louisiana, passed away Saturday morning, October 25, 2025, at her residence. She was born June 22, 1924, in Riceland (Plaquemines Parish), a loving daughter of the late Antoine and Alvernia (Parker) LaFrance.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, August B. Ragas, Sr.; two oldest daughters - Geraldine Joan Reddick and Virgie Lee (Reddick) Louis; 10 brothers and sisters - Frank, Harry, Felix, Paul, Antoine, John, Rosita, Antoinette, Emelda, and a sister who passed away at age 4; six step-children - August Ragas, Jr., Nelson Ragas, Sr., Mervin Ragas, Sr., Alfred Ragas, Sr., Florence (Barthelemy) Ragas and Wilmer (Parker) Ragas; and four grandchildren - Alfred Louis, Jr., George Ragas, Jr., Enrique Niguel Ragas, and Tyriel Harrison.
She is survived by two children, Clark Ragas, Sr. and Valeria Harris, and their families; one sister, Martha (LaFrance) Harvey and her family, and four generations of cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as countless friends who will sadly miss her.
Marguerite's formal education ended in middle school, after which she worked in a seafood factory and earned a living working in the garden with her husband. She sold her vegetables at the French Market and to local residents and grocery stores, from New Orleans to Boothville.
Marguerite was a devout Catholic and faithfully attended Our Lady of Lourdes in Happy Jack, St. Jude in Diamond and St. Patrick in Port Sulphur.
She enjoyed watching wrestling and Family Feud. Her favorite song was Jambalaya (On the Bayou). Some of her favorite meals were morrel, mustard greens, snap beans and gumbo. Affectionately nicknamed "Ma Goi", she always gave more than she received and helped more than she asked. No matter how early you woke up, she already had made breakfast. And no matter how late you visited or came home, you were always greeted with a warm meal, a kiss, and a hug. For over a century, her tireless energy provided support, care, and love to all who knew her.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Catholic Church, 8968 Highway 23, Belle Chasse, Louisiana 70037.
