Joyce Ann Carter Degree

Joyce Ann Carter-Degree was born on January 25, 1943, in St. James Parish, Louisiana, to the late Milton and Alma Carter. She was a longtime resident of Marrero, Louisiana, and the proud mother of five children. She peacefully departed this life on May 29, 2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family.
Joyce was baptized at an early age and carried her faith throughout her life. She was a devoted mother and homemaker to all who came into her presence. Joyce took special joy in raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a woman of quiet strength, deep wisdom, and unwavering love. She shared her love through cooking for her family and watching Lifetime movies. That was her way of getting the family to stay longer. She was known for her gentle presence, warm smile, and for making everyone feel like family. Whether offering advice, a prayer, or a plate of food, Joyce gave of herself completely.
She is survived by her children: Allen Degree, Sr. (Fonteechio), JoAnn Moore (Walter), and Dwayne Degree (Gytonnea); 30 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; her sisters Lynette Paul, Geraldine Barker, and Brenda Jones; and brothers Edward, Willie, and Melvin James Carter (Debra)—each of whom will never forget the love she brought into their lives. She also leaves behind her goddaughter, Gail Brown, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Joyce was preceded in death by her children, Tyrone Degree, Jr. and Antoinette Anderson; her grandson, Jermil Degree; her parents, Alma and Milton Carter, Sr.; and her siblings, Milton Jr., Alvin, Michael, Lionel, Joseph, and Larry Carter, as well as Janet Benjamin, Gloriadean Brown, and Gertrude Dickerson.
Though she has gone to be with the Lord, Joyce’s spirit will continue to live on in the stories we tell, the traditions we honor, and the love that binds our family together. She was truly one of a kind—and we are better, stronger, and more loving because she was ours.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Rock Of Ages Baptist Church 6533 Acres Road, Marrero LA. 70072. The visitation will begin at 8AM followed by a 10AM service. Rev. Terrence Ranson is the pastor and Rev. Kenneth Walker of the Regular Baptist Church of Gretna will officiate. Interment will follow in Evening Star Cemetery in Harvey LA.
