Joseph Lewis Obituary

Joseph Duncan Lewis, Jr., known to some as "Deedy", was born in New Orleans, LA on October 6, 1956 to the late Reverend Joseph Duncan Lewis, Sr. and the late Joyce Helen Johnson Lewis. He came to know the Lord at an early age and was a member of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Harvey, LA. Joseph grew up in Algiers and is the second of four children: Karen E. Lewis, Muriel Lewis Breaud (Leon), and Gary M. Lewis, Sr. (Greta).
He attended L. B. Landry Jr./Sr. High School where he was active in the Chess club, Drama club, History club, Math club and National Honor Society in addition to playing offensive lineman on the football team. He studied Civil Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Math at Southern University in New Orleans and Petroleum Engineering at Louisiana Tech University where he became a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated and was bestowed the line name, "The Brown Bomber." He later joined the Air Force as a telecommunications specialist and traveled around the world; Izmir, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Colorado Springs, CO, and Biloxi, MS were just a few of his destinations. He concluded his collegiate matriculation at Grambling State University, majoring in Business Management and Administration.
He was married to Hazel Cinderella Pitts and to their union had three children, Joseph Duncan Lewis, III, Jarvis Daniel Lewis, and Taryn Arlette Gaines-Manley (Amanda), and two grandchildren, Jara Donique Lewis, and Zion Nasir Lewis.
Joseph loved to debate all things sports and politics. He was a brilliant mind that loved chess and taught anyone who dared to take the seat. Anyone that knew him would say he was kind with a heart of gold, compassionate, caring, and the definition of cool. He loved his family and God and was a friend to many. His love for music included all genres and he was a big fan of Bootsy Collins, Gill Scott-Heron, Michael Franks, and Mystikal's Here I Go!
Later in life Joseph started Big Easy Technologies and employed his sons in its early years teaching them all that he knew about telecommunications. He was an entrepreneurial spirit with an open mind. His latest endeavor was screen-printing and T-shirt design.
His smile would light up any room and it remained amid his health challenges. He never complained about his circumstances and lived a life of faith in action.
Joseph departed this life on December 26, 2023 leaving to cherish his memories, his friend and mother of his children, Hazel, his children, Joseph, Jarvis, and Taryn (Amanda), and grandchildren, Jara and Zion; Siblings: Karen, Muriel (Leon), and Gary, Sr. (Greta); Nieces: Ateja Lewis (Frank), Kristy Martin (Derrell), Aijanae Sartin (Tre), Tiffany Lewis, and Giavonni Lewis; Nephews: Terral Lewis (Amber), Delvin Lewis (Dominique), Darren Lewis (Jamani), Keenan Lewis, Gary Lewis, Jr. (Ebony), and Garron Lewis (Danta); and God children: Irene Lewis, Keenan Lewis, and Kristy Martin. Also cherishing his memory is a host of great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and his furry pal King!
He was preceded in death by his parents Reverend Joseph Duncan Lewis, Sr., and Joyce Helen Johnson Lewis, and both pair of grandparents, Samuel D. Lewis, Sr., and Geneva G. Lewis, Sidney T. Johnson, Sr., and Lillie M. Johnson, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Our hearts are broken by his unexpected departure. He was loved dearly by his family and friends, but certainly God loved him best.
