John Morris Smith entered eternal rest on Friday, October 29, 2021, at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero, LA. John was born on December 23, 1947, at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA from the union of Charles Ray Smith and Elvera Senegal Smith.
Mr. Smith was educated in the Jefferson Parish School System where he attended Lincoln High School. He was employed with the Louisiana Celotex Company for an extended period. John attended St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Marrero, LA where he was baptized. Mr. Smith enjoyed fishing and spending time with his friends and family. He is well known in the greater New Orleans area among older and younger generations for his bold and courageous personality. He was always the "life of the party" at every event with his charisma and great sense of humor. John left a lasting impression on everyone who met him. He was a socialite who had a love for his family. John's last request was for his family to get together for a seafood boil about two weeks before his death. He attended the gathering and enjoyed every moment with his loved ones.
He leaves to cherish his earthly memories; three children: Shawn Payne, Michelle Myles (Leonard), and John Martin; fifteen grandchildren: Shawntrell, Willie, Quentin, Quentrell, Kassidy, Lassie, Kasi, Kalyiah, Darnell Myles, Michelle Holton, Valincia Bennett, Leonard Holton III, Darnell Vontrell Myles Jr., Madyson Myles, and Braxton Myles; six siblings: Gayle Cobb, Dorothy Harper, Deborah Mitchell, Malcolm Smith Sr. (Gustavia), Leatrice Smith, and Jill Smith. Two best friends: Chester and Bobby; and faithful friend: Oscar Valentine Jr.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Charles Ray Smith and Elvera Senegal Smith, one brother: Richard Charles Ray Smith Sr.; three brothers-in-law: Elbert Cobb Sr., L. J. Harper Jr., and Johnny Mitchell; one sister-in-law: Joan Marie Harris Smith; and two nephews: Willie Cobb and Myron Harper.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the memorial service which will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at New Zion Baptist Church, located at 1131 Garden Road, Marrero, LA 70072. Service will begin promptly at 1 p.m. Interment will be private.
Due to COVID-19, everyone in attendance MUST wear a face mask or other proper facial covering and practice social distancing.
