James Simmons

James Simmons departed this life peacefully on Monday, July 8, 2024 at his home in Avondale LA. He was 78 years old. He was born October 27, 1945, in New Orleans to union of the late Leola and Lawrence Herbert Simmons Sr. He attended Lincoln High School and was employed by Green and Walker Galvanizing, Haywilk Galvanizing and Hobson Galvanizing for many years. In 1969 James was baptized at the Little Zion Baptist Church of Avondale by the late Rev. William Robinson. He was currently a member of the Second St. John Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his passing. James was a loving man who never took a day for granted. He lived life to the fullest and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also loved hunting, fishing, collecting cans and dancing. He really knew how to "get down" on the dance floor. He is the beloved father of James Robinson, Lloyd Bickham, Maurice Bickham, Perry Bickham, Tony Reynolds (Erin), and Arleen Taylor (Shawn). Brother of Louise Littleton, Patricia Harris (Lionel), Edward Simmons, Alvin Simmons, Richard Simmons, Phillip Simmons (LaSandra), Theodore Simmons, Mary Lee Alexander, the late Elizebeth Kennedy, and the late Lawrence Simmons Jr., Herbert Simmons and Alcide Simmons Sr.

James is also survived by several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and devoted friends.

Relatives and friends of the family, officers and members of Second St. John Baptist Church and Little Zion Baptist Church as well as all neighboring churches are invited to attend the funeral service on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at the Little Zion Baptist Church located at 433 Avondale Garden Road, Avondale LA. 70094. The visitation will begin at 8:30AM followed by a 10AM service. Pastor Damien Jumill Brown will officiate and interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park.
