James Matthews

We regretfully announce the passing of James Matthews Jr., of Algiers, New Orleans, Louisiana. James passed away at his home Sunday June 18, 2023, at the age of 72.

James was born to Gloria Matthews and James Matthews Sr. on February 26, 1951, in New Orleans, LA. James was a very independent and resilient person. He was a man of few words, but significant actions.

James began a career in Porter/Maintenance where he worked for over 40 years with GFL Management and was always an outstanding employee.

After decades of employment at GFL Management, James retired. During his retirement, he enjoyed his old Western movies and fishing. While James never married, he lived a full and vibrant life with more friends than you could count. His nephews and nieces meant more to him than words can describe.

James is survived by his sisters, Connie Johnson née Matthews and Lynn Matthews, and his brother, Michael Matthews, along with a host of nieces and nephews. James is preceded in death by his mother, the late Gloria Matthews; his father, the late James Matthews Sr.; his brothers, the late Ronald "Ronnie" Matthews and the late Anthony "Ricky" Matthews; his sister, the late Sharon Matthews; and his nephew, the late Shawn Matthews.

Though James was a private person, he was an important part of his family, and his loss is deeply felt.

Funeral services for our beloved James will be held at Fischer Community Center Church, 1737 L. B. Landry Ave., New Orleans, LA 70114 on Saturday, July 1, 2023. Visitation will start at 9:00 AM and the funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM. Bishop J Nelson Brown officiating and interment will follow at Providence Memorial Park and Mausoleum, 8200 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA 70003. The Repast will be held at The Kitchen, 4801 General Meyer Ave, New Orleans, LA 70131 starting at 12:00 PM.

Due to Covid - 19, facemasks are encouraged.
