Hattie Lou Barnes Martin was born March 20, 1937, in Silver Creek, MS to the late Clayborn and Lula Belle Barnes. She departed this life peacefully on Monday, June 24, 2024. Hattie attended Red Top neighborhood school. She left Silver Creek at a very young age and resided in New Orleans a number of years when she married her husband, Deacon Louis Joseph "Parran, Uncle Lo" Martin, Jr., a native of New Orleans, LA, who preceded her in death on November 5, 2010. Their blended family of 5 moved from Orleans Parish to Jefferson Parish where they became life-long residents of Avondale, LA. She was an active member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Avondale until her recent failing health. As a hardworking, dedicated wife and mother, Hattie touched many lives, especially in the field of home health care, where she worked for several health agencies. She retired from the Orleans Parish school board on November 22, 1995, and continued working as a Wal-Mart associate. Hattie's health and vigor aided her to work until the ripe age of 86.
Hattie is preceded in death by her parents, Clayborn Barnes and Lula Belle Martin, her son, Edward Karl Barnes, grandson, Lejuane Singleton, her three siblings: one sister, Corangie Barnes, and brothers, James Clifton (JC) Barnes, Jr. and Ozell (O.Z.) Barnes. Left to cherish her memories are: 4 children: Erma (Johnie) Singleton, Sheila (Thefety) Tibbs, Louis J (Joe Buck) Martin III, and Phyllis D. Martin, 8 grandchildren: Guy Singleton, Shauntresse (Daniel) Borsage, Elliott Dew Jr., Louis Martin IV, Asha Barnes, Akeelah Barnes, Karl (Lil Karl) Jefferson, Kendrick Tibbs. 14 great-grandchildren: Amanie' Singleton, Malik Singleton, Isiah Singleton, Anijah Singleton, Guy Stallworth, Aenari Roberts, Amaya Roberts, Alyssa Roberts, Aften Roberts, A'zaia Barnes, Torie Tibbs, Liah Martin, Landon Martin, Micah Green. 4 great-great grandchildren: Jayce Averette, Guy Stallworth, Geovani Stallworth, Giannis Stallworth, a God daughter Juane Thomas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at Saint Joseph The Worker Catholic Church located at 455 Ames Blvd, Marrero LA. The visitation will begin at 8:30AM, the rosary will be said at 9:30AM followed by a 10AM mass. Father Sidney Speaks will celebrate the mass and interment will follow in Restlawn Cemetery in Avondale LA.
