Deacon Herman Smith, Sr. peacefully transitioned into eternal life on Monday, December 25, 2023. He was born on April 30, 1938, to the parentage of the late Eddie Smith, Sr. and the late Emerle Smith in Welcome, Louisiana.
He was married to his childhood sweetheart the late Florence W. Smith for over 50 years. From this union five children were born, Gail (Gerald) Jones, Leticher (Roosevelt) Randall, Herman, Jr. (Alisa) Smith, Patricia (Rev. Robert) Gordon, and the late Florence (Rev. Roosevelt) Washington. He was the loving grandfather of twelve grandchildren, Marious, Teaonde (Jessie), Gerald, Jr, Tonika, Robin, Alesha (Anthony), Meagan (Shaun), Rhema, Jonathan (Ciera), Dae'trenei (Kevin), Darius (Terrell) and Roosevelt, Jr., who all affectionately called him "Pawpaw"; he was the blessed great grandfather of nineteen great grandchildren. He was the brother of Eddie Smith, Jr., Stella Scioneaux, Rogers (Cecile) Smith, Myrtle Madison, Lawrence (Margaret) Smith, Manda (Marvin) Robinson and Jerry (Tracy) Smith; he was also the brother of the late Lillie Mae Whittington, the late Warren Smith, and the late Leroy Smith. He was the Godfather of Joyce Lemieux, Sharon Price, Steven Broden, Marvin Scioneaux, Tyler Madison, and James Polk, Jr.; he was the brother-in-law of Dora Smith, Ora Lee Broden, Barbara (Rev. Sidney) Jones, Idell Taylor, Walter (Velma) Whittington, and Rev. John Helire, Sr.
He was baptized at the Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church by the late Rev. Wilson Smith, Sr. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Little Zion where he later became the Senior Deacon, he was currently under the leadership of Pastor Damian J. Brown. He was a hard worker and always took great care of his family. He labored at Avondale Shipyards and retired after working at Avondale for well over 35 years. When he was not at work, he was often working at home or building something at home. He was a quiet man, but he instilled in his children the importance of a relationship with God and being good to others. He loved all of his family, and his church family, and he especially loved his grandchildren, and he did whatever he could to help them. His legacy will live on forever and we thank God for a life well lived!
He leaves to cherish his precious memories and continue his legacy his four loving children, Gail, Leticher, Herman and Patricia, twelve grandchildren (including his devoted grandson Marious Jones), nineteen great grandchildren, four sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, his siblings, his brothers-in-law, his sisters-in-law, his godchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends, and his Little Zion church family.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Florence W. Smith, his baby girl Florence Washington, parents Eddie and Emerle Smith, 3 siblings, several sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
Relatives and friends of the family and neighboring churches of Avondale, are invited to attend the Celebration of Life Service which will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 433 Avondale Garden Road, Avondale, LA 70094 on. The visitation will begin at 9 a.m., and the service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Damian J. Brown, officiating and interment will follow at Mt. Calvery Cemetery in St. James, LA.
