Carey Drew Obituary

Carey James Drew was born July 8th, 1955, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Velma McCelos and David Drew. He was baptized at an early age at True Light Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where his spiritual foundation was first laid. He attended school there, growing up surrounded by family, faith, and community, until moving to Chicago, Illinois, where he worked in various capacities for nearly 30 years. During this time, he also served his country with honor, receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Army in (year to be confirmed).

As a child, he was lovingly called Mike, a nickname that stuck to his joyful spirit. As a dynamic dancer in his childhood, it was said that when Mike moved, he tickled your soul, leaving laughter and joy wherever he went.

In Carey's adult life, he took great delight dressing in his fineries, never without style. With long fingernails and jewelry proudly showcased, he carried himself with unmistakable flair. He was known to gloat when shooting pool with Stephan and his nephew Lyndon, especially when he took that unforgettable "mean lean" on the pool table, bringing them to shame with his OWN pool stick, smiling the whole time.

Shortly after moving to New Orleans in 1999, Carey pursued and acquired a Class A Commercial Driver's License, a lifetime dream, giving him the ability to drive an 18-wheeler cross country. That achievement brought him deep pride and a sense of freedom he cherished. Carey adored children and always found a way to entertain them, drawing joy from their laughter and simple wonder.

Though soft-spoken, his quiet demeanor, yet sly & cunning personality, earned him the nicknames many knew and loved: Slim, Otis, Dude... Each name spoke to a different piece of his character-smooth, clever, unforgettable.

He was preceded in death by mother, Velma McCelos, father, David Drew, Tyrone Johnson, brother, his grandparents, Emma and Leroy McCelos, Artomese and David Drew Sr., Antronine Fallon, sister-in-law, and Tammy Mack, niece.

He leaves to mourn his devoted, caring wife, Francesca, who stood faithfully by his side; Two "God given" attentive sons, Stephan Mack (Maria) and Sidney Mack; His sister, Malinda D. Jones, of Dallas, TX; His brother, Clifford Drew (Eloise) of Columbus, GA; Grandkids, Stephan Mack Jr. and Skylar Mack; Sister-in-laws, Tammy Allen and Debra Johnson of Baton Rouge; A loving "sister in Christ," Claudia Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives & loved ones who will carry his memory forward with love and gratitude.
