Alden Roche' Jr Obituary

Alden Stephen Roche´, Jr. departed this life on Sunday May 29, 2022, at his home in Marrero, Louisiana. He was 77 years old. Alden was born to the union of the late Alden Stephen Roche´, Sr. and Nivernia Gaston Roche´ and was raised in Gretna, Louisiana. He was a graduate of All Saints Elementary School and Xavier University Preparatory School (Class of 1963). Upon graduation he enlisted into the United States Army. After being Honorably Discharged from military service in 1966, he entered Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he was a scholar (4-year honor student) and an athlete playing college football for the Southern Jaguars. He received first team All-American honors, was selected as an All-SWAC Defensive End, was Southern’s Most Valuable Defensive Lineman in 1969, and was named a recipient of the NCAA’s Postgraduate Scholarship which would contribute $1;000 dollars toward his pursuit of a graduate degree. Alden was drafted as a Defensive End by the Denver Broncos in the Second Round (37th overall pick) of the 1970 NFL Draft. That same semester he received a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in Industrial Technology from Southern. As a Rookie he played in all 14 games before being traded to the Green Bay Packers in a draft-day trade in 1971 where he played until the end of the 1977 season. He then joined the Seattle Seahawks playing until his retirement at the end of the 1978 season. He played a total of nine seasons in the National Football League. Alden was inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. Outside of football, he taught at Delgado Community College during the off seasons. After retiring from the NFL, he worked at International Marine Terminal and Lockheed Martin. He was an active member of the NFL Retired Players’ Association.

Alden was a devoted husband and is survived by his loving wife Linda Harvey Roche´, children:  Stacee J. Roche´ and Jared S. Roche´. stepchildren: Letisha Mitchell and Krystal Mitchell, grandchildren: Jaren Roche´, Levy Roche´, Oya Roche´, Deja Coleman, Jayshawn Washington, Ani Mitchell, Malaya Mitchell, Kieran Warren, Karter Warren, and Aria Hill. great grandchild: Karter Washington, sister: Stephanie Roche´ Edwards Butler, nephew: Sean Montgomery, great niece: Alexandria Montgomery, great nephews: Glenn S. Montgomery, Jr. and Marcus L. Jones, Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Alden Stephen Roche´, Sr. and Nivernia Gaston Roche´, son: Alden Stephen Roche´, III, sister: Maliss Roche´ Montgomery, nephew: Glenn S. Montgomery, Sr., and niece: Ericka Edwards Jones. He loved all of his family dearly. He was an inspiration to many by setting an example as a good husband and father to his children. He will be missed by a host of friends and family.

Relatives and Friends of the Family, also Pastors and Members of All Saints Catholic Church and St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Xavier University Preparatory Class of 1963, Southern University System Board of Supervisors, President of the Southern University System and Chancellor of Southern University and A&M College, Southern University Faculty and Staff, Southern Jaguar Football Staff and Team, Southern Jaguar Alumni, Owners, Staff and Players of the Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, and Seattle Seahawks, Officers and Members of the NFL Retired Players Association, and Employees of International Marine Terminal and Lockheed Martin are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 455 Ames Blvd., Marrero, Louisiana 70072 at 11:00 am on Friday, June 10, 2022. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m.  Rev. Sidney Speaks, Celebrant and interment will be private.

Due to COVID – 19, Everyone in attendance Must wear a facemask or other proper facial covering.
